Record uptake of heat pumps across the UK

The number of UK homes taking advantage of government-funded initiatives to have heat pumps rose to a record level in 2024.

Figures released in March 2025 showed there had been a 52% increase in the installation of low-carbon heating systems last year than in 2023.

Energy experts said that the big jump could be down to the increase in the grant being offered by the government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS).

The scheme was brought in to persuade more people to switch from gas boilers, and provides a £7,500 grant to households to offset the cost of installation.

Most UK properties use gas boilers to meet their heating requirements, but the government is keen to get more people to move away from fossil fuels like gas and they believe that heat pumps, which uses electricity rather than gas, will play a key part in achieving their climate ambitions for the country.

Home heating accounts for 14% of the UK’s carbon emissions, and despite 2024’s big increase in the installation of heat pumps, the total number of heat pump sales is still well below the government’s target of 600,000 a year by 2028.
